If you're considering a Fourpeaks vacation rental, CLICK HERE for our Safety First! & Guest Information pages.During the Summer season guests at our two remote camps, Wolf's Nest and Ridge Camp, meet us at our Camp Barn Office. There, we take their food and gear and jeep it up to camp. And we take it back down when they leave. There's no need for them to pack it themselves. In Winter, early Spring, and at other times when road conditions are unfavorable, guests at Wolf's Nest and Ridge Camp must carry their stuff on their own (Wolf's Nest, 5/8 mile or Ridge Camp 1-1/2 miles). Firewood plus propane for lighting and cooking are already in place at camp. Wash water is at the Well House at Ridge, but wash water must be carried up for Wolf. A full orientation to camp precedes the visit. Extra backpacks and a cargo sled are available for loan. No guest vehicles. Except for short access roads off Stonehouse Road (to Thoreau House, Gypsy Camp, Sugar Camp, New Camp and The Cabin), the use of guest vehicles on Fourpeaks roads and trails is strictly forbidden. Who came. Where they're from. Where they stayed. The Season. What they did here.
The Story. Jim Melvin's Camp. A ski weekend at Whiteface with my first wife in '67. I can't remember if the kids were there or not. I wanted a wilderness place, lots of trees and space, to get away to whenever I wanted. I figured out this would be cheap land--not suitable for building development, and I started asking around for land, focusing on the lower priced offerings. Talking with the old couple who ran the Golden Arrow, or whatever it was called in those days, they pointed the way to Wilmington. A few days later Dan Deighan, the land-savvy real estate man from Placid, was driving us up Stonehouse Road in his four-wheeler through a foot of snow. We walked in from the farmhouse site along the woods road through the Back Field. I remember the pine boughs were heavy with snow. When we got there it was love at first sight. I peeked in the window. The way Dan explained it, the 90-acre lot was $14,000, which worked out to be $100 per acre for the land as the building was valued at $5,000. I never thought about not paying full price. She made brown curtains with a deer hunting theme for the windows that Winter and we broke up in the Spring. I moved into the Chelsea Hotel and for a while "camp" was my only real home. I met Jim Melvin, the former owner, and we got friendly. He was born in the lot across the road and his grandad owned the 90 acres. He built the camp at the edge of the field by the old stone fence that separated the cultivated land from the woodlot. I learned he used to "guide" people from Placid during hunting season and used "The Cabin" as a bunk house. Dan said he got disgusted with poachers, decided to sell the place in an angry mood and never changed his mind. Years later he built the Camp Barn for me with his son, who became a building contractor and a chiropractor in Poughkeepsie. I wrote about this in a poem, "Camp." The story about The Cabin, especially about the furnishings, is continued on the next page. #0388 "What a wonderful time we had last December at the Cabin. Everything was just right. We got engaged while we were there!" Subject: A Chickadee Story From: Barbara Fr*** bkfr***@hotmail.com To: "Your Adirondack Guide." Martin@4peaks.com Hi Martin, Thanks for the newsletter. It helped me remember that we never wrote you to tell you what a wonderful time we had last December at the Cabin. Everything was just right. We got engaged while we were there! (Sorry we didn't tell you then -- we were enjoying having a secret for a few days.) Unfortunately our pictures (taken on a disposable camera) are pretty pitiful, but we were just thrilled to see ourselves on George's website! Have you decided whether he has a Buddhist nature? Seems like a safe bet. Enjoy the spring, and we hope to see you again soon. Barbara and Danny Never got any pictures from them, but CLICK HERE to see the photos I took of Barbara and Danny with George at The Cabin and the Office while they were here at Fourpeaks. #1580 "John and I enjoyed our Honeymoon at Fourpeaks! The Cabin was wonderful!" Subject: THANK YOU! Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 From: "P***, Donna J, BMSLS" donna**@att.com To: Martin@4peaks.com Dear Martin, Just wanted to send a note to let you know how very much John and I enjoyed our Honeymoon at Fourpeaks! The Cabin was wonderful! We loved getting back more to the basics of life, so to speak. We were plenty warm, impressed with the excellent array of cookware available [we love to cook and made some great meals there!], and how sweet it was that you brought us the biscuit fixin's. We made those right up the next morning and enjoyed them with that homemade jam! Being there made our Honeymoon the kind we REALLY wanted. Relaxing with no phones or TVs, trails to hike (what a great view from the Lookout trail), and just general all-around enjoyment of our surroundings. We will definitely be return guests, and are just dying to bring our favorite couple there with us. They will also enjoy Fourpeaks! Thank you again for a wonderful place to be together on our Honeymoon! Sincerely, Donna Pertgen Guestbook Entry Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 Name : Donna P*** Email : donna**@ems.att.com Location : Cicero, NY Comments : Our honeymoon ther e was wonderful! Our Chocolate Lab, Jeremiah, enjoyed it as much as we did! We will definitely return to your wonderful resort! Subject: RE: A Barn Swallow Story. Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2001 From: "P***, Donna J, NNCER" donna@att.com To: VisitUs@4peaks.com Martin, Last year we honeymooned at your wonderful Four Peaks the week of 10/8. We planned on returning this year for our first anniversary on 10/7, but I was quite pregnant and due the day before (10/6). Our little son was born on 10/2. We plan on brining our son, Jacob, to Four Peaks--maybe as early as next year. We so much enjoyed our stay there. It was, for us, the perfect honeymoon! And we want our son to appreciate the beauty of it all as well. You can bet he will grow up knowing all about Four Peaks. Thank you for continuing to send us your e-mails! Sincerely, Donna (and John) Pertgen #0986 "Our kids had a great time running from the Shed to the Cabin and to the Screen House. Very rustic--the furnishings are very lux." Subject: Guestbook Entry Name : L.& E. Bene Email : esh***@home.com Location : New Jersey Comments : Martin, sorry it took us so long to reply! We had an absolutely wonderful time in mid-August at The Cabin. Our kids had a great time running from the Shed to the Cabin and to the Screen House. It was the most unusual place we have ever stayed. Very rustic--the furnishings are very lux. Did a lot of hiking, outdoor cooking and biking. We loved going down to the river and sunning on the rocks while the kids played--we even had a BBQ lunch there one day. The kids loved heating water and taking a bath by candlelight. We really enjoyed ourselves and you shouldn't change a thing! Many thanks from the Bene family! . Are you in this picture?
