View from primitive sand beach.Photo by Todd Shirley. CLICK FOR FULL SIZE IMAGE. Background information. A water reservoir for paper mills and other industry at AuSable Forks years ago, Taylor Pond is surrounded by 9,000 acres of New York State Wilderness. There's evidence of a dam which at one time controlled the water supply. There's a primitive campground at one end, 3 remote lean-tos and canoes and boats to rent (Summer only).
Taylor Pond and the land around is a designated New York State Recreational Wilderness area and is open to the public year round. Fees are not collected outside of the Summer season. A few local people hunt in season and there may be snowmobilers on the trail in Winter. But the Lake Placid tourists never get this far from the village and the commercial attractions. Taylor Pond is little used. A good place for a quiet look at natural things. (Loons still live here.)
[Reservation System 800/456-CAMP. Day Use in Season $3/per car. Canoe with jackets&paddles $15/day (2003).]Reccommended activities. Canoeing. Delicious swimming and a great view. Canoe or walk out to the little cove just beyond Pine Point near the site of the old dam. Consult map at campground or ask for directions to tent sites I-1 and I-2 (#8 on map.) Fishing. Rainbow/Lake Trout and Salmon plus smaller fish. Hiking. An access road goes entirely around the lake not far from shore and doesn't connect with other trails. Very quiet. Worth exploring. Take a lunch. Stop at one of the leantos if not in use.
